The recovery process after an injury can be long and daunting, especially if it requires any kind of physical therapy. One of the most common therapies to help you get back on your feet is Hydrotherapy. Hydrotherapy uses water to help lower the intensity of physical exercise or therapy. It has great effects on trying to heal your bones & neural rehabilitation. The bouncy created from being submerged in the water allows you to try exercises that may be too difficult for you with an injury.
Benefits of Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy is great for decreasing swelling, increasing circulation and improving flexibility. It is often useful for athletes after training. Hydrotherapy can be very beneficial for arm & leg injuries such as sprains, knee replacement, ACL injuries, arthritis & even conditions such as Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease & more.
This type of therapy is also great for pain relief & strengthening weak muscles in older age groups, it can help with back injuries & pain and even paralyzed muscles. Hydrotherapy can range from simply soaking in the heated water or doing actual exercises such as walking, lunges, squats & more. Your doctor or physical therapist will recommend which type of Hydrotherapy is right for you.
The Risks of Hydrotherapy
Although there are many benefits to Hydrotherapy, there are still some injuries or medical conditions that are not conducive to this type of treatment. If you have a fever, you should avoid Hydrotherapy because this type of therapy uses heated water & it could be harmful to the body.
Smaller injuries where inflammation, redness & heat exists to the problem area, should not use Hydrotherapy. Heart Disease & Hypertension are also two medical conditions that are not safe for Hydrotherapy because it helps increase blood flow & this can cause stress on the heart. Additionally, Vascular issues, kidney problems & cancer are not safe for Hydrotherapy. It is best to consult your doctor on what type of physical therapy is right for you.
Hydrotherapy can be a very successful treatment to help get you back to normal after an injury. But as always, it is important to listen to your body & your professionals on how to heal!
